Planning and Development
The Planning and Development Department is primarily responsible for the administration of various land use regulations, including the Zoning Resolution and the Subdivision Regulations. The department also assigns rural addresses and responds to public nuisance complaints in unincorporated Carbon County.
The staff also provides administrative and technical support to the Planning and Zoning Commission, including implementation of the Carbon County Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
The staff strives to provide complete and accurate information to the Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of County Commissioners and the public so that informed decisions are made efficiently and effectively. The Carbon County Planning and Zoning Commission will meet on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 10:00 A.M., Carbon Building, 3rd Floor - Room 332 ("Ferris Room"), located at 215 West Buffalo Street, Rawlins. Carbon County Building Permits
Spring is in the air and many in Carbon County are planning their building projects. Carbon County requires a building permit for all construction that places new buildings or structures on the land: Pole barns, shops and garages.
Items That Do Not Require a Carbon County Building Permit
- Fences less than 8 feet tall. All fences in Commercial or Industrial zones shall require a building permit.
- All agriculture related water tanks do not require a building permit.
The Planning and Development Department will review the building permit application to determine compliance with County zoning and subdivision standards. If you have questions concerning building standards such as frost protection, plumbing, electrical or structural specifications, you should consult a qualified contractor, architect, or engineer.
